サソリに刺される人は年間約 120 万人にのぼり、抗毒素は高価であったり、供給が不足していたりすることが少なくありません。Claude は、新しい治療法の発見に向けた最初の一歩を踏み出しました。

[2/5] @citrini と協力して、5 種類のサソリ毒素（毒素が細胞に付着する部分）に結合するタンパク質を設計するよう Claude に依頼しました。
その後の 64 時間で、Claude は 30 万を超える設計を生成し、そのうち 211 件を @adaptyvbio と @TwistBioscience に送って実験室での試験を行いました。
[3/5] 211 件のうち 17 件がバインダーの基準を満たしました。これらは、メキシコ、北アフリカ、中東のサソリが産生する危険な毒素に結合しました（ブラジルの種が産生する毒素には結合しませんでした）。
[4/5] これは探索的な取り組みであり、抗毒素を作り出したと主張するものではありません。そのためには、生きた細胞の中で、さらにマウスでバインダーを試験するなど、数多くのステップが必要になります。それでも、Claude がタンパク質設計の研究を具体的に支援できることを示す一例です。

[1/5] New on our Science Blog: designing protein binders against scorpion neurotoxins.
Scorpions sting about 1.2m people every year, and antivenoms are often costly or in short supply. Claude has made an early step toward finding new treatments.

[2/5] Working with @citrini, we asked Claude to design proteins that bind to five scorpion toxins (covering the part of the toxin that latches onto cells).
Over the next 64 hours, Claude generated over 300,000 designs; we sent 211 to @adaptyvbio and @TwistBioscience for lab testing.
[3/5] 17 of the 211 met the criteria for a binder. They bound to dangerous toxins produced by scorpions from Mexico, North Africa, and the Middle East (but not by a species from Brazil).
[4/5] This is exploratory work, and we’re not claiming to have produced an antivenom—for that, we’d have to test the binders within living cells, then in mice, among many other steps. But it’s an example of how Claude can concretely assist research in protein design.
